CUMMING, Ga. — A standoff between sheriff’s deputies and a man in Atlanta’s suburbs has ended with the man’s suicide and a baby in critical condition.

Local news outlets report that officials say the man barricaded himself inside his Cumming home with his 11-month-old daughter after pulling a gun during a domestic dispute with his wife Monday afternoon. The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office blocked off several streets in the area.

Deputy Doug Rainwater says a SWAT team went inside to place a phone after they failed to communicate with the man, and heard a baby crying upstairs. Rainwater says SWAT rescued the baby and found the father dead from a self-inflicted gunshot.

The baby was rushed to the hospital, where her mother is with her.

Authorities plan to release the names on Tuesday.
