MELROSE, Mass. — Authorities say a man wanted on attempted murder charges for allegedly breaking into a home and attacking two women has been arrested in Massachusetts.

John Ferreira, of Melrose, also faces charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, home invasion and other offenses. He was taken into custody on Tuesday.

Police allege the 54-year-old man broke into the home of two women he knew and violently attacked them on Friday before fleeing the scene.

Police say a patrolling officer in Westborough recognized Ferreira’s vehicle Tuesday and attempted to make contact. They say Ferreira noticed the police vehicle and fled, but officers later stopped his car and arrested him.

Ferreira remains held pending his arraignment at Malden District Court. It wasn’t immediately known if he’s been assigned a public defender.

This story has been corrected to show that police say the attack happened on Friday, not Saturday.
