James M. Lanning

James M. Lanning, 66, of Columbus, formerly of Merrillville, passed away Sunday, August 6, 2017, at his residence.

Jim was a longtime horse lover and enjoyed camping in Brown County State Park. He was an avid woodworker who loved creating heirlooms for his family and friends. Jim spent many hours modifying his Jeep to go on 4-wheel-drive adventures. He attended Jeep Jamborees all around the country.

Jim was devoted to his grandson and being a part of all his activities.

Mr. Lanning was born on October 17, 1950, in Hammond, IN, to the late James and Eileen Yates Lanning.

On February 21, 1970, he married Sue Eldridge.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Sue; daughters, April (Chris) Pepmeier of Columbus and Michelle Lanning of Franklin; a grandson, Colton Pepmeier; sister, Anita Faye Baran of Moorseville; and nephew, Jeffrey Baran of Indianapolis.

The funeral service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Jonathon Moore Pike with Ralph Eldridge officiating. Friends and family may call from 10:30 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home.

Following the family’s wishes, cremation will take place after the funeral.
