Changes will greet East fans

Fans who attend football and volleyball games at Columbus East this fall will notice some structural changes.

As soon as school was out this spring, workers removed the old track around the football field. They poured asphalt for the new track, and after a long delay they put the new red rubber surface down about 2½ weeks ago.

Athletics director Pete Huse said he was hoping the lines could be painted on the track this week.

The Olympians also are in the process of replacing all of the bleachers in the main gym. The balcony bleachers were removed this summer, and new ones are going in.

Huse said he hopes demolition on the lower bleachers can be done in a week to 10 days. The target completion date is Sept. 26.

Until that time, volleyball matches will be played in the auxiliary gym. East hosts Columbus North on Sept. 28 and the North-South Volleyball Invitational on Sept. 30, so Huse is hoping the bleachers can be in place before that.

“We told them we have to have it for the North-East game,” Huse said.

The Olympians still can practice in the main gym because they’re not using the bleachers, which have had the railings removed.

East’s football team is on the road for Friday’s scrimmage and next week’s season opener. The home opener will be Aug. 25 against North.

“That track already looks better, even without the lines being down,” Huse said. “The bleachers needed an overhaul to begin with.”

Meanwhile, the Olympians also found out recently that they will be hosting the girls soccer sectional at Richard Wigh Soccer Complex. The girls sectional originally was slated for Greenwood, but has been moved.

The boys soccer sectional will be at Seymour.

Football scrimmages set

Six area football teams will take part in scrimmages Friday night. All begin at 7 p.m.

Columbus East and Columbus North both will be on the road. The Olympians will visit Martinsville, and the Bull Dogs will travel to Greenwood.

Jennings County will host Brownstown Central. Brown County will visit Eastern Greene, Edinburgh will travel to Covenant Christian and South Decatur will visit Anderson Prep Academy.

North wrestlers conditioning

The Columbus North wrestlers have begun conditioning this week.

The conditioning takes place after school until 5:15 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Wrestlers should meet in the wrestling room.
