Vernon man arrested on domestic battery charges

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Vernon man on multiple charges including domestic battery after he was accused of wrapping a cord around a woman’s neck to choke her.

Deputies were called to a residence on Posey Street early Wednesday about a fight, said Lt. Mike Mowery, sheriff’s department spokesman.

When deputies arrived they could hear a woman screaming for help and located a man and a woman upstairs. The man, identified as Jeffrey Hoffman, 46, Vernon, had a cord wrapped around the female’s neck, choking her, Mowery said.

When deputies intervened, Hoffman began fighting with them, biting one of the officers on the hand, Mowery said. After a short struggle, Hoffman was arrested and the female was treated at the home for minor injuries.

Hoffman is being held on $25,500 bond on preliminary charges of criminal confinement, two charges of domestic battery, battery on a law enforcement officer, strangulation and resisting law enforcement, Mowery said.
