One driver arrested on alcohol charge after two-car accident

Columbus police arrested a local man on a preliminary charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated after responding to a report of a two-vehicle accident.

Ralph A. Avolio II, 53, of Columbus, was taken to the Bartholomew County Jail, where he was released at 2:45 a.m. Thursday after paying 10 percent of his $5,000 bond, jail officials said.

At about 9:20 p.m. Wednesday, Columbus Police Department Sgt. Ben Goodin responded to a report of a crash involving a Toyota Corolla and a Honda Accord at Third and Jackson Streets, said Lt. Matt Harris, spokesman for the police department.

Goodin determined that Avolio, who was the driver of the Accord, failed to yield to the driver of the Corolla, Harris said.

While speaking with Avolio, Goodin noted that his speech was slurred and Avolio had the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath. Avolio initially declined to take a breath test in the field, so officers applied for and later received a search warrant for a blood draw, Harris said.

After the blood draw, Avolio was transported to the jail.
