Nola B. Eaton

NORTH VERNON

Nola B. Walk Eaton, 95, of North Vernon, passed away on Monday, August 14, 2017, at Mason Christian Village in Mason, Ohio.

Nola was born February 9, 1922, in Harrison County, Indiana, the daughter of William and Tamzin Walk. She was a 1940 graduate of New Salisbury High School in New Salisbury, Indiana. She married Gene O. Eaton August 24, 1946, in New Salisbury. He preceded her in death on February 15, 2011.

Nola graduated from Indiana University in 1944 with a teaching degree and went to work at Columbus (Indiana) High School teaching Home Economics from 1944-1946. After marrying Gene she obtained a job teaching Home Economics at North Vernon High School from 1946-1954.

In 1946 Nola and Gene moved to North Vernon and opened a chicken hatchery. The business grew to be Eaton’s Feed Mill, which they owned and operated for over 60 years.

Nola returned to teaching in 1968 at North Vernon Junior High School and worked there until her retirement in 1985. During her time away from teaching, Nola also served a term as a member of the Jennings County School Board. She was active in the Retired Teachers Association after her retirement, D.A.R., Delta Kappa Gamma and Wednesday Research Club.

After Gene retired from the feed mill, they could be found on the golf course. Nola played until moving to a retirement facility in Mason, Ohio. They also took advantage of their time together by traveling, with many trips to antique car shows, air shows and reunions with Gene’s Army Air Corps fighter group. Nola enjoyed playing golf, bridge, taking walks and being with her family and grandchildren.

Nola was a member of North Vernon Presbyterian Church and Graham Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her sons, Max (Donna) Eaton and Ken (Angie) Eaton of North Vernon and Phil (Debbie) Eaton of West Chester, Ohio. She has five grandchildren, Rex (Stephanie) Eaton of North Vernon, Kristina (Chris) Hunt of Sellersburg, Alex (Melissa) Eaton of Carmel, Kate and Kevin Eaton of West Chester, Ohio, one stepgrandchild, MacKenzie Vannoy of North Vernon; and four great-grandchildren, Adelyn and Pierce Eaton of North Vernon, Claire Hunt of Sellersburg and Jack Eaton of Carmel.

Nola was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, brother, Joseph Walk, and sister-in-law, Mary Walk.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 19, 2017, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Services in North Vernon. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until time of service on Saturday. Burial will be in the Vernon Cemetery.
