A man who was threatening to harm himself while perched on the Interstate 65 bridge over State Road 46 was safely taken into custody after talking with negotiators.

The incident began at 11 a.m. Thursday, when Columbus police and firefighters, ambulance personnel and Bartholomew County Sheriff’s deputies were sent to the west side of Columbus where the man was reportedly threatening suicide.

Officers stopped traffic on the interstate and limited access near the bridge for about a half hour as negotiators talked with the man and a bucket truck was used to take him off the bridge.

The man surrendered to authorities at about 11:40 a.m., just before heavy rain began in the Columbus area.
