BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — City officials in Kentucky are highlighting the impact of a committee formed nearly two years ago to increase diversity in city fire and police departments.

The Bowling Green Daily News reports the number of minorities in Bowling Green’s police and fire departments has risen from 12 in 2015 to 21 in 2017, which city Human Resources Director Mike Grubbs attributed to the Workforce Recruitment and Outreach Committee’s alteration of the recruitment process.

The committee was formed after the U.S. Department of Justice launched an investigation into police demographics, as only 5 percent of the department was black, compared to 14 percent of the city’s population.

The committee sits in on interviews, has recommended a stronger emphasis on online recruiting and dropping the age requirement for firefighters and performs community outreach.
