Police arrest burglary suspect after break-in

Columbus police arrested a local man on a felony probation warrant for burglary after he was accused of fleeing from police after an early Saturday morning break-in.

Police were sent to a home in the 1700 block of Chandler Lane at 6:45 a.m. Saturday when a homeowner there said a man broke into her home, took her purse and fled on a moped.

Officers observed a man, later identified as Brandon L. Richardson, 20, Columbus, and attempted to stop him after he disregarded a stop sign, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Richardson refused to pull over and police pursued Richardson until he crashed after traveling through a field in the 6200 block of Regency Drive, Harris said. Officers then pursued Richardson on foot and took him into custody, Harris said.

Officers determined the moped Richardson was driving had been reported stolen in Bartholomew County earlier this year, Harris said.

They also found the purse that had been stolen during the burglary inside the storage compartment of the moped, Harris said.

Richardson was taken to the Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of burglary, possession of stolen property, two counts of resisting law enforcement and three Bartholomew County warrants.
