TUCSON, Ariz. — A Tucson-area girl is in stable condition after she got off a school bus and was swept away in a flooded wash, authorities said.

Drexel Heights Fire District spokeswoman Tracy Koslowski said the girl was knocked down and swept about 20 yards (18 meters) on Wednesday after getting off a school bus.

The girl struck her head when she fell, Koslowski said.

She was unconscious when passers-by pulled her out and called 911. She was then taken to a hospital, Koslowski said.

Thunderstorms with heavy rains had hit the area where the girl tried to cross, according to the National Weather Service.

Students on the bus said the water was waist deep where the girl tried to cross.

The students said the bus driver would not drive through the flooded road and the girl and another student decided to get off a stop early and walk.
