LOS ANGELES — Officials say the criminal courts building in downtown Los Angeles has been placed on lockdown after a jail inmate attempted to escape as prisoners were being led off a Sheriff’s Department bus.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Nicole Nishida says an inmate ran out of a secure lockup area at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center around 9:30 a.m. Friday.

She says the inmate was apprehended “shortly after,” when he ran near a security booth at the courthouse.

Nishida says the building has been placed on lockdown out of an abundance of caution while officials conduct an inmate count.
