BATON ROUGE, La. — A Baton Rouge man has abruptly pleaded guilty to manslaughter and armed robbery in the May 2016 death of East Feliciana Parish School Board member Broderick Brooks Sr.

The Advocate reports 20-year-old Jacquez Griffin’s plea Friday came as his second-degree murder trial neared an end. Had he been convicted of that charge, it would have carried a mandatory sentence of life in prison.

Under the plea agreement, state District Judge Lou Daniel said he will sentence Griffin to 40 years on the manslaughter charge and a concurrent 60-year term on the armed robbery charge, meaning he could serve up to 60 years for the crimes.

The sentencing will take place later this year.
