AUGUSTA, Maine — Young Mainers are kicking off the state’s bear hunt with the state’s annual youth hunting day for the big animals.

The Youth Bear Hunt is on Saturday all over the state. Licensed junior hunters are allowed to hunt bears with firearms, bows or crossbows. The use of hunting dogs is prohibited, but hunting over bait is allowed.

Twenty-seven youth hunters took a bear last year on youth day.

The rest of the annual bear hunt gets started on Monday and runs until November. Hunters typically harvest about 3,000 bears per year in Maine.
