BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A man is in custody after allegedly stealing an empty school bus and leading police on a chase near Birmingham.

Blount County school officials say a bus was taken from outside the home of a school bus driver early Monday.

Police later received a call saying the bus had been spotted near Birmingham. Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies caught up with the bus, but authorities say the driver refused to stop.

The bus was eventually stopped on Interstate 459 after striking an Alabama state trooper vehicle. Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Randy Christian says the driver allegedly threw a gun out of a bus window before being arrested.

Authorities haven’t released the suspect’s name, and the motive is unclear.
