SUMMERVILLE, S.C. — South Carolina troopers say Interstate 26 just outside of Charleston remains closed after a truck wreck.

Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Matt Southern said the wreck happened around 10 a.m. between exit 194 and exit 199.

Authorities say the wrecked truck ended up in the median, but fears of a hazardous chemical leaking led them to close the highway until the chemical can be cleaned up and the wreck cleared.

Southern did not say what kind of chemical was involved.

The wreck was causing traffic to back up nearly 10 miles (16 kilometers) both toward Columbia and Charleston as all traffic had to leave I-26.

Southern suggested anyone coming or leaving Charleston to take U.S. Highways 52 or 78 instead.
