WILMINGTON, N.C. — Officials at a North Carolina university say a faculty member has died of a possible case of pneumococcal meningitis.

The University of North Carolina at Wilmington announced on Tuesday that Hannah Frank, a faculty member in film studies, died on Monday.

A statement from the school said Frank’s family said her death may have been caused by pneumococcal meningitis. After talking with the New Hanover County Health Department, the school said it wanted to assure the campus that the strain of meningitis is not considered contagious and that there is no need for protection of those who made contact with Frank unless there is an outbreak.

Frank joined the UNCW faculty in 2016.
