2 arrested after car checked at gas station

JENNINGS COUNTY — Police arrested two local men after being told a wanted person was in a car at the Crystal Flash gas station in North Vernon.

When North Vernon officers arrived at 12:47 p.m. Monday, they found the car and recognized Jacob McCarty, 21, North Vernon, a passenger, said K-9/Sgt. Andrew Richmond, department spokesman.

K-9 Heros alerted to the odor of drugs inside the car, Richmond said. While investigating the K-9 alert, officers found 6 grams of heroin in a bag in McCarty’s shorts, he said.

Officers also found and seized multiple cellphones from the vehicle, $566 in cash and an open pack of rolling papers, Richmond said.

McCarty was arrested on the warrant for failure to appear on a prior drug possession charge and additional charges of possession of a controlled substance, maintaining a common nuisance, Richmond said.

McCarty is being held at the Jennings County Jail in lieu of $3,055 bond, jail officials said.

Also arrested was the driver, Guy Yeager, 21, North Vernon, on charges of maintaining a common nuisance and possession of paraphernalia, Richmond said. Yeager is being held at the Jennings County Jail in lieu of $1,055 bond, jail officials said.

The vehicle was impounded for having improper license plates, Richmond said.
