NEW MILFORD, Conn. — State police have identified a man who authorities say was shot and killed by a New Milford officer as he approached police with a shotgun and ignored orders to drop the weapon.

Troopers announced Thursday that the man was 62-year-old Kostatinos Sfaelos, of New Milford. They also identified the officer as 33-year-old Christopher Hayes, who has been on the force for three years.

State police are investigating the shooting.

Authorities said New Milford officers responded to Sfaelos’ home on Monday for a reported disturbance. When officers arrived, police said Sfaelos left his house with a shotgun and ran into the woods.

Police say Hayes fired at least one shot when Sfaelos came out of the woods, approached officers with the shotgun and ignored repeated demands to drop it.
