KEOKUK, Iowa — A domestic abuse assault charge against a southeast Iowa school board member has been dismissed.

Court records say the Lee County charge against 40-year-old Carlita “Carrie” Steele was dropped Wednesday. She’s a school board member for the Keokuk Community School District.

A criminal complaint says Steele’s husband, Christopher, told officers July 11 that his wife had threatened to shoot him and herself. He says he fled their home when she went to get one of the two guns she owned.

Court records say the case was dismissed because of a lack of probable cause to show Steele’s husband was assaulted. She’d pleaded not guilty to the charge.
