APLINGTON, Iowa — Fire has destroyed a livestock auction building in northern Iowa’s Butler County.

Officials say a police officer noticed flames around 1 a.m. Wednesday at Central Iowa Exchange on the north side of Aplington. Firefighters from Ackley and Parkersburg helped the volunteer Aplington department extinguish the blaze.

Three horses were rescued, and no injuries to animals or people have been reported. The cause is being investigated.

Lestrisha Wise told the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier that she had big plans when she bought the business about three years ago. She says she “loved the nostalgic feeling of that sales barn, and I wanted to capture it, keep that live.”

Horse auctions were being held monthly, and Wise also held household consignment auctions. One was scheduled for Wednesday.

She says she hopes to rebuild.
