WILMINGTON, Del. — The only U.S. citizen injured in a New Year’s Eve terrorist attack in Istanbul, Turkey, has spoken out about the physical and emotional toll he’s endured since the shooting.

The New Journal in Wilmington, Delaware, reported Friday that Jake Raak continues to face huge expenses from surgeries and rehabilitation. He’s also processing the emotional trauma.

The 35-year-old was shot in the hip. The bullet traveled through his thigh to his knee. The attack killed 39 people at a night club. Raak was celebrating with high school friends.

Business has dwindled at Raak’s subcontracting company, which performs government defense work. The firm is down to a skeleton crew. He said he’s unsure of the future.

Raak has created a nonprofit called Journey Forward. He hopes it will aid fellow terror victims.
