ALBANY, N.Y. — Top state officials and members of the Legislature are mourning the passing of Democratic Assemblyman Michael Simanowitz of Queens.
Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie says the 45-year-old lawmaker died Saturday. The New York Times reports Simanowitz died after a battle with cancer.
Simanowitz was first elected in 2011. Before seeking public office Simanowitz had been a legislative aide and a longtime volunteer with the New York Police Department.
Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo praised Simanowitz as a dedicated public servant but “first and foremost” a family man.
Heastie said he was deeply saddened by Simanowitz’s death. He said he will remember Simanowitz’ quick wit and intelligence.
Republicans also praised Simanowitz, with Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb calling him a “true gentleman” respected by both parties.
Simanowitz is survived by his wife and four children.
