BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Authorities have identified a man who was fatally shot and then hit by a train in Birmingham.
Local news media reports the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 35-year-old Howard Dewayne Bruce. He was found in the driver’s seat of a pickup truck with a single gunshot wound to the chest area after reported shooting around midnight Tuesday.
Birmingham Police Sgt. Karl Walker says an officer in the area discovered a man in the truck had been struck by a Norfolk Southern train.
Walker says Bruce tried to flee in his truck, which stopped on the railroad tracks. The train then hit the truck, which spun around.
Police counted more than 50 shell casings and collected more than 70 pieces of evidence at the scene. No suspects are in custody.
