STATESVILLE, N.C. — A North Carolina restaurant owner has been sentenced to eight months in prison for attempted tax evasion.

The Charlotte Observer reported that 49-year-old Peter Gjuraj on Tuesday was also ordered to serve eight months of home confinement after prison.

Gjuraj owns the Blue Parrot Grill on Lake Norman in Mooresville. He had pleaded guilty earlier this year to hiding nearly $3 million in income and filing false tax returns.

Gjuraj told U.S. District Judge Richard Voorhees in Statesville that he wanted to apologize to the court, his family and the community.

The IRS says he failed to report the money between 2012 and 2014. He owes an additional $320,000 in federal taxes.

Prosecutors said he used business funds to buy two houses, as well as cars and other personal expenditures.
