Camp Atterbury hosting annual Community Day

EDINBURGH — Camp Atterbury will host its third annual Community Day on Sept. 16.

This year’s event will begin with a 5K Run for Suicide Awareness, followed by a welcome and ceremony at Camp Atterbury’s Veteran’s Memorial. The ceremony will include a tribute to service members and veterans who have deployed through Camp Atterbury and Muscatatuck since World War II.

This year, the event will be at a new location, the Mitch Daniels North Barracks Complex, located across the street from the main post. The event will have a military static display area, live music, food, tours, re-enactors, Sahara the camel, an inflatable obstacle course and a live fire demonstration.

A POW Chapel service is scheduled at 11:30 a.m. on Stone Arch Road. The base at one time served as an internment camp for about 15,000 Italian and German prisoners of war, housed in a large compound where the POW Chapel is now located, Post Commander Col. John Silva said.

The event is free.
