CHELMSFORD, Mass. — Massachusetts prosecutors say a police officer was justified when she shot a man while responding to a report of a violent domestic altercation.
Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan announced Wednesday there was no criminal conduct involved when Chelmsford Officer Kristin Leary shot 35-year-old William Santiago.
Police reports show Leary arrived at a home in town on July 23 to find Santiago barricaded in a room with his ex-girlfriend.
Leary says officers were unable to use a stun gun on Santiago, who had attempted to stab officers with pieces of a mirror and wood.
Leary says she consulted with fellow officers before firing twice at Santiago, striking him in the leg and grazing his head.
He survived and faces assault charges.
Leary, an 18-year officer, remains on administrative leave.
