PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Officials have opened a new public walking path above a decommissioned landfill in Rhode Island.

WPRI-TV reports (http://bit.ly/2f7T9TK ) that the trail unveiled Thursday connects the Providence headquarters of the nonprofit organization Save The Bay to the Narragansett Bay.

The nonprofit organization ProvPort Inc. paid $2.5 million to clean the area, which it agreed to lease from the city in 2015.

Officials say people can use the path for bird watching, fishing, photography or a walk outdoors.

ProvPort says it’s important to create greater access to the waterfront in urban areas.
