PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Rhode Island National Guard has sent 15 airmen and logistics equipment to St. Croix to support recovery efforts in the region following Hurricane Irma.

The airmen left Friday from Quonset Air National Guard Base in North Kingstown, Rhode Island.

The state’s airmen also went to Texas to help following Hurricane Harvey and delivered meals, ready-to-eat to St. Croix and St. Thomas ahead of Irma.

Irma scraped Cuba’s northern coast Friday on a course toward Florida, leaving in its wake a ravaged string of Caribbean resort islands.

On St. Croix, the Rhode Island airmen will set up a staging area to facilitate inbound and outbound aircraft during recovery operations. Col. Daniel Walter, who commands the airlift wing, says this is what they train for— helping others who need assistance immediately.
