PORTLAND, Maine — Twenty-five Maine lighthouses are opening to the public on Maine Open Lighthouse Day.

The event on Saturday is sponsored by Coast Guard, American Lighthouse Foundation and Maine Office of Tourism, and draws 15,000 to 18,000 people a year.

The lighthouses that are display include some that are normally accessible including Owls Head Light, Bug Light in South Portland, Monhegan Island Light, and the tower at West Quoddy Head Light.

Steve Lyons, director of the Maine Office of Tourism, said the event highlights not only Maine’s heritage, but “the spirit of the Maine people.”
