NEW BERN, N.C. — Someone has tried to sabotage an annual charity bicycle ride across eastern North Carolina.

The New Bern Sun Journal reports (http://bit.ly/2wT9C5G ) the ride for people living with multiple sclerosis was marred after someone had scattered tacks along the route. At least 130 riders experienced flat tires on Saturday’s rides of between 50 and 100 miles.

Ride director Dani Clayton said it’s the first time something like this has happened in the two-day event’s 29 years. Clayton says Sunday’s route to Oriental will be checked for hazards.

About 5,000 cyclists and volunteers are expected to participate in the event.
