SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Prosecutors say a South Carolina man has been sentenced to life in prison for stabbing his girlfriend to death and kidnapping her 4-year-old daughter.

Solicitor Barry Barnette said 35-year-old Justin Paris pleaded guilty but mentally ill Monday to murder and other charges.

Barnette says Paris stabbed 38-year-old Amie Cordova with two different knives in the Spartanburg County home he shared with his parents in April 2015.

Barnette says Paris took the girl and Cordova’s minivan and the girl was found safe several hours later with dried blood on her face and arms.

Barnette said in a statement the crime scene was one of the most gruesome he has seen.

Paris’ guilty but mentally ill plea means he gets extra mental help behind bars, but will still serve life without parole.
