KELSO, Wash. — Police say a male died after he was hit by a freight train in southwestern Washington.

The Daily News in Longview reports ( ) the male died Monday morning in Kelso.

Police Captain Darr Kirk says the male was trespassing on the BNSF tracks near the 300 block of North First Avenue.

Kirk says he was hit at 5:30 a.m. and pronounced dead at the scene by the Cowlitz County coroner.

BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas said the person killed is the 13th person in the state of Washington this year who has died from a train collision after trespassing on BNSF rails.

Two others have died in a designated crossing area.
