GREAT FALLS, Mont. — A police officer in Great Falls shot and killed a burglary suspect after the fleeing suspect brandished a weapon.

The state Division of Criminal Investigation said Great Falls police responded to a report of a burglary in progress on the city’s north side at about 11 p.m. Monday. Officers found a 25-year-old man trying to break into a home. He ran away.

Investigators say officers pursued the man and he brandished a weapon. The officer shot and killed the man. The DCI says a weapon was found at the scene. The man’s name hasn’t been released.

Police Chief Dave Bowen asked the Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation to investigate the case.

An inquest will be scheduled by Fergus County Coroner Dick Brown.
