RALEIGH, N.C. — Gwen Norville, a deputy secretary in the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, has died after a brief illness. She was 55.

Department Secretary Erik Hooks said Norville, who was 55, died Monday. Spokesman Jerry Higgins said she died of cardiac arrest.

Norville was named deputy secretary in May for the Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice. She had oversight of prisons, the Office of Staff Development and Training, combined records, women’s services and correction enterprises.

The Kinston native had more than 30 years of experience in corrections. Funeral arrangements haven’t been announced.
