HARTFORD, Conn. — Federal authorities say a Rhode Island man is headed to prison for traveling to Connecticut to engage in sex with a 14-year-old girl.

The U.S. Attorney’s office says Nicholas Murphy, of Exeter, Rhode Island was sentenced Wednesday in Hartford to five years behind bars. He pleaded guilty in June to traveling to engage in illegal sexual activity with a minor.

Court documents say the 27-year-old Murphy communicated with the victim online through Facebook and other platforms. They say the girl told Murphy she was 16 years old, but was actually 14.

Prosecutors say Murphy traveled from Rhode Island to Connecticut to meet the victim in 2015, and engaged in illicit sexual conduct with the girl.

Murphy was arrested on related state charges last May. He’s been detained since then.
