BURLINGTON, Vt. — University of Vermont professors and school administrators have reached a standstill in contract negotiations.

The Burlington Free Press reports (http://bfpne.ws/2y66Wlg ) bargaining talks ended in an impasse on Tuesday after seven months of discussion. United Academics, the union representing the professors, is seeking faulty wages and benefits that are equal to peer universities like the University of Maine and the University of New Hampshire.

According to UVM, faculty wages are at or above market levels. The administration says salary increases above 2 percent would require tuition increases and budget reductions.

The union says the survey the administration used to consider salary includes schools that aren’t comparable to UVM.

Administrators say both parties need to find an outside mediator to move forward with negotiations.
