Charred home to be demolished

The city has approved condemning and demolishing a home on California Street.

The Columbus Board of Works on Tuesday approved a recommendation from the city’s code enforcement officer, Fred Barnett, to condemn and demolish a residence at 1829 California St. owned by Daniel and Katrina Wilhelm. Barnett told the board that the home was deemed unsafe after it was discovered to be charred inside as a result of a June fire.

The Wilhelms, who have addresses in Nashville and Tallahassee, Florida, waived their right to a hearing held before the board and agreed to have the property demolished, Barnett said. They will be responsible for picking up the demolition costs, he said.

Barnett said he’d like to see the building torn down within 60 days but said he is willing to negotiate with the Wilhelms on that.
