VERO BEACH, Fla. — A Florida man who disappeared while swimming in the ocean has been identified.

News outlets report 32-year-old Johnnie Thomas was identified Thursday as the man who went missing Wednesday afternoon.

Witnesses told police that Thomas began having difficulties around 100 yards (91.41 meters) off shore. A news release from the Vero Beach Police Department says he did not resurface after being spotted going under the water.

Police spokeswoman Officer Anna Carden says Thomas had been swimming with his girlfriend.

Authorities say search efforts will continue.
