AUGUSTA, Maine — The Maine Department of Labor says the unemployment rate in the state rose slightly from July to August, but remained below last year’s mark.

The labor department says the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.8 percent for August was up from 3.7 percent the previous month. The unemployment rate was 4 percent a year ago.

Maine’s unemployment rate was less than the U.S. rate of 4.4 percent, which was also up slightly from July but down from last year. New England’s unemployment rate was 4 percent.

The labor department says the unemployment rate in Maine has been 4 percent or less for 23 months. That is the second longest such stretch in more than 40 years.
