Brown County pages: BucCornEar Festival

HELMSBURG — Popcorn, pirates and fire prevention. Those are topics you wouldn’t normally see in one sentence, but at the BucCornEar festival in Helmsburg this weekend, all three will be celebrated.

Jackson Township Fire Department, 4831 Helmsburg Road, will host its sixth annual festival from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. No admission is charged for the family-friendly event, but donations will be accepted to support the volunteer fire department’s community education and training programs.

Firefighters will be in pirate attire, as a nod to the Jolly Roger flag that flies over the volunteer fire station. Guests are encouraged to come dressed to the theme.

Carnival games, contests and challenges — including corn shucking and popcorn eating — will take place starting at 10 a.m. Photo ops will be available with Smokey the Bear and Sparky the Fire Dog. A live power line demonstration and house burn also are planned.
