AKRON, Ohio — An Ohio man accused of shooting his 2-year-old daughter in the head while trying to unload his handgun has been arraigned on a felony charge of child endangering.

Akron police say 27-year-old Dexter Brooks said he was trying to unload his gun Saturday afternoon at the family’s home when he fired a shot, thinking the gun was empty. Police say the bullet went through a staircase into a lower-level bathroom, where it struck the girl in the head. She was hospitalized in critical condition.

A court official says Brooks was arraigned Monday in Akron Municipal Court and returned to jail. His next court appearance is scheduled Oct. 4 in Summit County Common Pleas Court.

A message seeking comment on Brooks’ behalf was left at his attorney’s office Tuesday.
