FLORENCE, S.C. — A South Carolina woman has pleaded guilty to lying to federal officials about a previous marriage.
U.S. Attorney Beth Drake said in a news release that 41-year-old Herav Hizmi of Surfside Beach lied about a previous marriage to an Israeli citizen.
Hizmi faces up to five years in prison and a fine of $250,000 when she is sentenced later.
U.S. District Judge Bryan Harwell in Florence accepted the plea and will impose the sentence after he reviews a pre-sentence report which will be prepared by the U.S. Probation Office.
Prosecutors say Hizmi had married a fellow-Israeli citizen in 1996 and came to the United States and married an American in 20013 without divorcing her first husband.
Prosecutors say she lied when she tried to changer her immigration status.
