MINOT, N.D. — Ward County is giving the city of Minot about $5 million to help with property buyouts for a long-term flood protection project.

The city is running short on funds to continue its own acquisitions and appealed to the county for excess money the county received from the state for property buyouts. The commission approved the transfer on Tuesday.

Minot Finance Director David Lakefield says the city already has purchased or is in the process of acquiring $23 million in properties.

The 2011 Souris River flood damaged or destroyed more than 4,000 buildings in Minot, displacing more than 11,000 people and causing about $700 million in damage.
