WILTON, Iowa — An eastern Iowa steel mill has interrupted operations after an explosion hurt three employees and a contractor.

Davenport television station KWQC reports that Gerdau Ameristeel said in a news release Thursday morning that it has temporarily suspended operations at its plant in Wilton, Iowa, following the late Wednesday evening explosion.

The company says the four injured people were taken to hospitals, and that two employees have since been released.

The company did not give details about the explosion or what caused it.

Spokesman Shai Johnson says the company is working closely with authorities to investigate the incident.

A person who answered the phone at the Muscatine County Sheriff’s Office directed questions to the company and said she did not know if sheriff’s officials were investigating.
