Board set to vote on school calendar

Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. board members will consider a recommendation from a subcommittee about possible changes to the district’s three-year calendar.

Using results from an online survey that began Aug. 30, the subcommittee will report its recommendation after 4,900 people responded to the survey with 500 comments about the school-year calendar, said Teresa Heiny, assistant superintendent for human resources. The district currently uses a modified balanced calendar format, she said.

The subcommittee report will be made during the 6:30 p.m. Monday school board meeting at Clifty Creek Elementary School, 4625 E. 50N.

Formed by the district’s Business Advisory Council, the subcommittee consists of 20 to 25 people representing businesses, parochial schools, athletic departments, parents and the Columbus Teachers Association.

The panel looked at the results of the survey to create a three-year calendar that was brought to BCSC cabinet members before being sent back to the subcommittee for final review, Heiny said. The district is getting ready to start its third three-year calendar since the process began during the 2012-13 school year, Heiny said.

The district’s three-year calendar included two straight weeks for fall break in October, through 2014. That was changed to one week in October and a full week during Thanksgiving in 2015.

There will not be a designated public comment time on the calendar topic during the meeting, said Jim Roberts, BCSC superintendent. However, Roberts said individuals are invited to speak on any item on the board’s agenda during the designated public dialogue portion of the meeting, noting that the purpose of the survey was to determine preferences on the various calendar options available.

The school board will consider adopting the calendar recommended by the subcommittee during an Oct. 23 meeting at Mt. Healthy Elementary School, 12150 S. State Road 58. If the calendar is approved, the changes would take effect starting in the 2018-19 school year, Heiny said.
