LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Court records show that a toddler fatally shot in Little Rock was riding in a vehicle with her mother that was hit by gunfire the night before.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports that case files show 2-year-old Ramiya Reed’s death in November appears to be the result of a dispute between members of rival gangs.

Two suspects were arrested in May, after the child’s mother told investigators the pair had guns and were in the vehicle from which the fatal shot was fired. She initially didn’t provide a description of the suspects because she feared they’d hurt her or her family, according to court documents in the case.

A cousin of the child’s mother was driving the vehicle with Ramiya during the fatal shooting. According a police affidavit, she told investigators her sons had issues with gangs, and that the vehicle had recently been hit by gunfire. One of her sons later told detectives he was the one driving when someone shot at the vehicle the night before.

Ramiya was sitting on her mother’s lap when she was shot.

The jailed suspects are Deshaun Malik Rushing, 21, and a 17-year-old boy. The teenager’s trial is scheduled for Dec. 5. Rushing’s trial is scheduled for Feb. 6. Both defendants have pleaded not guilty to capital murder. Prosecutors have waived the death penalty in both cases.
