BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Almost $1 million in federal grant money is going to help business programs in Birmingham and Mobile.

The Department of Commerce announced grants to provide seed money for more than 40 entrepreneurial organizations in 28 states.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham will get about $500,000 for a planned business incubator that will help faculty, students and staff launch companies related to regional health.

Also in Birmingham, Innovation Depot will get about $171,000 for creation of a fund that will help new businesses increase their operations.

The Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation is receiving a grant of $300,000 to help a Gulf Coast program for entrepreneurs.

The government says grant recipients were selected from more than 200 applicants.
