SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Police have identified two Syracuse men killed by a driver who was fleeing a police traffic stop and was later charged with drunk driving.

The victims are 49-year-old Edward Rice and his 22-year-old stepson, Robert Owens. They died after their sedan collided Friday night with an SUV operated by 39-year-old Eric Dempsey.

Police had pulled Dempsey over, but he sped off and the officers gave chase. Police say Dempsey ran a stop sign before colliding with Rice’s vehicle.

Dempsey, who was treated for minor injuries, is being held at Onondaga Justice Center. Among charges he’s facing are two counts of manslaughter, two counts of vehicular manslaughter, driving while intoxicated, and unlawfully fleeing police.

It could not be determined if he has a lawyer to comment.
