MESA, Ariz. — A Mesa man has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of his wife.

Mesa police say 54-year-old Alvin Johnson Jr. is facing a second-degree murder charge.

They say 53-year-old Michelle Lynne Johnson was found dead inside the family’s home Monday night.

Police say Alvin Johnson gave contradictory statements to officers on scene, saying he didn’t mean to kill his wife.

Johnson told police he had been out drinking and when he returned home and was getting into bed, the gun accidentally went off and a bullet fatally struck his wife.

But Johnson isn’t sure if she was awake or asleep at the time.

When police arrived at the scene, they say Johnson had his hands in the air and was repeatedly saying “I did it. Arrest me.”
